Since the discovery of the “French Paradox” in the early 1990’s, that is, why the French eat foods high in fat but have a low rate of heart disease, wineries have had their wines tested for beneficial healthful constituents. The American Heart Association has gone as far as to say that moderate consumption of alcohol, one to two five ounce glasses of wine per day for men, somewhat less for women, may be associated with a reduced risk for coronary heart disease.
Thousands of years ago man used only what nature provided to treat injury and illness. Among these remedies were fruit wines and meads. Most of the concoctions of those ancient times were actually quite effective. It is only in the last couple of hundred years that the arrogance and ignorance of modern science and medicine has turned us from our spiritual and natural bond with the earth.
Modern science has developed many powerfull and usefull synthetic remedies, but many of the side effects are worse than the cure. The ancient druids didn't know about antioxidant, flavonoids and anthocyanins, but they did know that mead was good for you and in the end isn't that all that matters?
